Demand to Restore District Library in Mansa: Petition Submitted to MLA Vijay Singla

Mansa, December 27 – The District Library Bachao Committee, along with organizations such as All India Students Association (AISA), PSU, Dalit Human Rights Sabha, CPI (ML) Liberation, and Bahujan Mukti Party, has submitted a petition to Mansa constituency MLA Dr. Vijay Singla, urging the restoration of the district library.

The demand was made after a meeting held at Bachhat Bhavan, Mansa, where members expressed concern over the privatization and neglect of educational infrastructure, including libraries.

Key Issues Highlighted

The petition criticized the central and Punjab governments for implementing student-unfriendly policies, including privatizing public libraries and increasing the financial burden on students. They pointed out that the district library in Mansa was shut down, and an alternative facility was established under the Red Cross Society at Ambedkar Bhavan, imposing fees on students.

Speakers at the event included Sukhjit Singh Ramanandi (AISA), Amanpreet Singh (District Secretary), and representatives from various organizations. They demanded:

1. Restoration of the district library in its original form at Ambedkar Bhavan.

2. Allocation of previous infrastructure, including computers provided last year, to the library.

3. Modern facilities and extended library hours, with a plan to keep the library open 24/7.

4. Recruitment of permanent staff, including librarians, clerks, and restorers.

5. Utilization of the allocated ₹1.5 crore grant to begin construction of a proper library building.

MLA’s Assurance

Upon receiving the petition, Dr. Vijay Singla assured the committee that a plan would be formulated soon to restore the library, ensuring a conducive study environment for students.

Warning of Escalation

The committee warned of intensifying their agitation if their demands were not met. Many students and members, including Amanpreet Kaur, Sarbjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, and others, attended the meeting.

This movement underscores the importance of preserving public education infrastructure and ensuring accessible resources for students in Mansa.
