Jail Superintendent Varun Sharma Inaugurates Zonal Matches of Punjab Jail Olympics

Patiala, February 3:

The zonal matches of the Punjab Jail Olympics 2025, which will continue until February 9, commenced today at Central Jail, Patiala. Jail Superintendent Varun Sharma inaugurated the event and interacted with the participating inmate players, encouraging them to take an active part in the games.

Varun Sharma informed that inmates from Central Jail Patiala, Central Jail Sri Goindwal Sahib, District Jail Rupnagar, District Jail Sangrur, New Jail Nabha, and Sub Jail Malerkotla are participating in these competitions.

He further stated that under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the leadership of Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, inmates from various jails in Punjab will compete in multiple sports, including tug-of-war, volleyball, badminton, athletics (100m, 400m, long jump), and kabaddi. The winners of the zonal games will qualify for the Inter-Zonal Punjab Jail Olympics 2025, scheduled for March 15-16.

The Jail Superintendent also shared that ADGP (Jails) Arunpal Singh has announced certificates and cash prizes for outstanding jail staff members as a morale booster.

Additionally, he highlighted that the Punjab government has introduced various skill development programs for the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society. Under this initiative, male inmates are being trained in plumbing courses, while female inmates are being provided sewing training.
