United States to Withdraw from World Health Organization in 2026

24 January- The United States will officially withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22, 2026, according to an announcement from the United Nations on Thursday. The decision follows formal notification from President Donald Trump, who has criticized the WHO for its handling of the pandemic and other global health crises.

President Trump announced the withdrawal on Monday, shortly after being sworn in for a second term. The WHO expressed its regret over the move, noting that the U.S. has been its largest financial contributor.

Under a 1948 joint resolution of the U.S. Congress, the administration must provide a one-year notice before withdrawal and settle outstanding dues. The United States currently contributes approximately 18% of the WHO’s total funding. For the 2024-2025 biennium, the WHO’s budget is set at $6.8 billion, although the exact amount owed by the U.S. remains unclear.

Deputy U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq confirmed receipt of the U.S. withdrawal letter, dated January 22, 2025. “The withdrawal will take effect one year from the date of the letter, on January 22, 2026,” he stated.

Experts warn that the U.S. exit could severely impact key WHO programs, including efforts to combat tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and global health emergencies. The withdrawal order also directs the U.S. administration to halt negotiations on the WHO pandemic treaty during the transition period. U.S. personnel working with the WHO will be reassigned, and alternative partners will be sought to continue essential activities previously supported by the organization.
