Dr. Virendra Kumar Inaugurates National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation in Sehore

Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, January 17, 2025

In a significant stride toward improving mental health support and empowerment for Divyangjan, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, inaugurated the National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (NIMHR) in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh. The institute, established under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), is poised to become a cornerstone in the nation’s mental health rehabilitation efforts.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of prominent dignitaries, including Madhya Pradesh Ministers Shri Karan Singh Verma (Revenue) and Shri Narayan Singh Kushwaha (Social Justice and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities), as well as Shri Alok Sharma, Member of Parliament for Bhopal and Sehore, and Shri Sudesh Rai, Member of Legislative Assembly, Sehore.

Dr. Virendra Kumar, in his address, emphasized the institute’s role in advancing the government’s vision of empowering Divyangjan. He attributed the initiative to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who has prioritized the development of infrastructure and opportunities for persons with disabilities. The minister highlighted the success of government programs like the Divya Kala Mela, which provide platforms to showcase the talents of Divyangjan.

Shri Karan Singh Verma expressed pride in hosting this national institution in Madhya Pradesh, underscoring its potential to uplift lives both regionally and nationally. Shri Narayan Singh Kushwaha echoed similar sentiments, lauding the government’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities and quality resources for Divyangjan.

Spanning a sprawling 25-acre campus, the institute boasts modern infrastructure and has been developed with an investment of ₹127 crore. It includes four key blocks: Service Block, Administrative & Academic Block, Hostel Block, and Studio Apartments. Additional facilities, such as the Cross Disability Early Intervention Centre (CDEIC) and the Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra (PMDK), are set to enhance its impact. The CDEIC will cater to early interventions for disabilities, while the PMDK will facilitate the distribution of aids and appliances to Divyangjan and senior citizens.

Dr. Akhilesh Kumar Shukla, Director of NIMHR, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of all stakeholders in making the project a reality. He reaffirmed the institute’s mission to improve mental health rehabilitation and empower individuals with disabilities across the nation.

With the establishment of NIMHR, India takes a significant step forward in addressing mental health challenges, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing the quality of life for Divyangjan.
