Health Concerns Mount as Farmers’ Hunger Strike Crosses 52 Days; Punjab Government Faces Tough Questions

The hunger strike led by farmer leader Sardar Jagjit Singh Dallewal at the Khanauri Morcha, which began on November 26, 2024, has entered its 52nd day today. Dallewal has been on a water-only fast, which has further deteriorated his health, raising serious concerns.

According to reports, Dallewal, who weighed 86.95 kg at the start of the protest, now weighs only 66.4 kg. Doctors have revealed alarming medical findings, including severe dehydration and critical health markers. Despite this, the Punjab government has reportedly submitted a statement to the Supreme Court claiming that Dallewal’s health is stable and improving. Farmer leaders have demanded the public release of Dallewal’s medical reports to clarify the government’s stance.

Meanwhile, 111 farmers have joined the hunger strike on the Haryana border to amplify the protest. On the second day of their fast, one of the participating farmers, Pritpal Singh, suffered a seizure and received medical assistance from a team of doctors.

Farmer leaders criticized the Punjab government for ignoring the dire health situation and questioned the validity of its claims. They reiterated their demand for the government to honor the promises and written commitments made by the central authorities.

Medical teams from Haryana have been deployed at the protest site to monitor the health of the farmers participating in the strike. The situation has sparked nationwide attention, with calls for swift action to address the farmers’ demands before further health complications arise.
