Key Concerns
The dominance of private universities in the 2024 MAKA Trophy results raises critical questions about the Punjab Government’s role in supporting state universities. Only one government university from Punjab, Guru Nanak Dev University, made it to the list, ranking third. Meanwhile, the top two spots were taken by private institutions—Chandigarh University and Lovely Professional University.
Although in previous years, government universities performed better in the MAKA Trophy rankings, private universities are now leading the list. This shift highlights the widening gap between private and state-run institutions in terms of resources, infrastructure, and leadership.
This underscores the declining state of Punjab’s government universities. Many lack Vice-Chancellors (VCs), leaving them without effective leadership. Without sufficient support and infrastructure, these institutions struggle to compete with private universities.
The government—whether led by the SAD, Congress, or AAP—continues to prioritize free schemes over addressing systemic issues in education and sports. This neglect threatens the competitiveness and future of state-run universities in Punjab.

The MAKA Trophy is a renowned sports award named after India’s first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. It is presented to the university that delivers the best overall performance in sports at the All India University Games.
