Union Health Ministry Cracks Down on Spurious Drug Trade in Kolkata: Massive Seizure Worth ₹6.60 Crore

31 December 2024, New Delhi: In a decisive move against the illegal distribution of counterfeit medicines, the Union Health Ministry conducted a high-profile raid at a wholesale drug supplier in Kolkata. The operation, led jointly by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) East Zone and the West Bengal Drugs Control Directorate, uncovered a large consignment of anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and other pharmaceutical products suspected to be spurious.

The raid targeted M/s Care and Cure For You, a wholesale firm in Kolkata. Investigators found drugs labeled as originating from countries such as Ireland, Turkey, the USA, and Bangladesh, but the absence of supporting import documentation flagged them as potentially counterfeit. Empty packaging materials, presumably used for repackaging counterfeit products, were also discovered on-site, further confirming suspicions.

The market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be approximately ₹6.60 crore. Samples have been sent for rigorous quality testing, while the remaining stock is being securely stored by CDSCO officials.

A breakthrough in the case was achieved with the arrest of the alleged proprietor of the wholesale firm, a woman who has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. This period will allow authorities to interrogate her further and expand the scope of the investigation.

The Union Health Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy toward counterfeit drugs. “This operation highlights the ongoing threat posed by spurious medicines and our relentless efforts to combat it. Consumers’ health and safety are our top priorities,” stated an official from the Ministry.

The CDSCO, along with state authorities, is continuing its probe to unearth further links in this illicit network. Meanwhile, the Ministry has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspected counterfeit medicines to the appropriate authorities.

This decisive action reinforces the government’s dedication to safeguarding the integrity of India’s pharmaceutical sector and ensuring safe access to medicines for all.
